Farmers as Citizens

"We are learning to look to ourselves to find solutions to our problems"

In March, FYF launched a 10-year programme in northern Malawi to empower 30,000 farming families to secure a stable livelihood and call on government to respond to the needs of the rural poor.

Building on successful work

The programme builds on our work with 3,000 farmers in Rumphi, which has already made a big difference to farmer's lives.

"I've been working with FYF since 2004.

The project has given freedom to my life.

I have confidence to talk to strangers; my family has food; and I am earning money through my agriculture to meet my family's needs"

Our genuinely inclusive approach to working with communities, involving local people at every stage of project planning and implementation, ensures long-lasting and positive impact.

The 10-year programme will ensure that thousands more people have this opportunity to transform their lives.

Securing livelihoods

The Rumphi Rural Livelihoods programme will train thousands of people in:

  • Sustainable farming practices
  • Natural resource management and the conservation of biodiversity
  • Business skills to boost family income

Creating lasting change

  • Raising awareness of rights and providing training in leadership skills
  • Supporting families to cope with the challenge of HIV and AIDS
  • Supporting community groups to prioritise community objectives and take action

In 2007 we achieved our aim of enabling 75% of families to meet their food needs throughout the year. Now we aim to ensure 100% of families have food all year round.
